MOLAR CONTROL, Out-bend and Toe-in

The author is presenting a 12-year-old Caucasian male, with narrow arches and deep overbite. The treatment started in the mid-mixed dentition with a Schwarz appliance and followed by a holding Hawley appliance.  Due to a non-compliance and loss of deciduous molars, the case slightly relapsed, therefore, we decided to recover the loss with a Mulligan Out-bend and Toe-in appliance. The palatal force on deciduous canines accelerated their exfoliation.

The maxillary arch has widened due to:

  1. The combination of the buccal forces of the Out-bend and Toe-in
  2. The Frankel effect (the arch wire kept the cheeks away, thus allowing the tongue to widen the arch)
