Publications

The International Association for Orthodontics (IAO) currently offers a few publications to its member and journal subscribers. In addition, members gain access to all previous issues of IAO journal publications including the International Journal of Orthodontics (IJO) and the American Association for Functional Orthodontics’ (AAFO) The Functional Orthodontist.

International Journal of Orthodontics:

The IAO publishes the quarterly International Journal of Orthodontics (IJO) as a benefit of membership. The IJO features original scientific and clinical articles on orthodontics, plus an editorial, practice tips and office management hints. The IJO’s purpose is to serve as an educational tool, as well as to present innovative treatment mechanisms as they are developed.

Straight Talk:

The IAO publishes a newsletter, Straight Talk, which is provided to IAO members free of charge. This lively publication contains news of interest, helpful clinical and marketing hints to use in one’s practice, and numerous orthodontic continuing education courses offered throughout the world.

IAO Annual Membership Directory & Referral Guide:

Members also receive an annual membership directory and referral guide, which lists members’ office addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and information regarding orthodontic services provided. Such information is included to allow IAO members easy access for referrals of patients to the other side of town or the opposite corner of the world.  This list can be searched in the Members Only Section, or on the above link "Find a Doctor" a limited search (e-mail addresses and street addresses are omitted) is also available.

IAO Directory of Orthodontic Suppliers:

Members receive with their IAO Annual Membership Directory & Referral Guide a listing of orthodontic suppliers that have participated with the IAO either by advertising in the journal or exhibiting at a recent IAO Annual Meeting. This list can also be found in the Members Only Section of the website.

Past Publications:

All past IAO publications are available online in the password-protected Members Only Section of the website. Upon becoming an IAO member, doctors will be granted access to this area of the website.

The International Academy of Orthodontics’ (the IAO’s original name) International Journal of Orthodontics was published from January 1962 to January 1968.

From 1984 to 1989 the IAO co-published The Journal.

A new journal was created in 1990 entitled the Journal of General Orthodontics. This journal was published under this name from March 1990 to Winter 2001 at which point it changed its name back to the original International Journal of Orthodontics.

Also in the Members Only Section is the American Association for Functional Orthodontics’ (AAFO) The Functional Orthodontist, which was published from 1984-2007.
